Matadouro

The Industrial Slaughterhouse of Porto was deactivated over 20 years ago. After a turbulent history, where for every step forward, two or three were taken back, it seems that things are finally on track.

But on track to where? And precisely from where?

The answer to the “to where?” is already known and seems to point to a path of renewal or gentrification for the area, depending on who you ask. With this opportunity, I wanted to explore the “from where,” which particularly surprised me.

There is a lot of history in the slaughterhouse, but what is there today has nothing to do with animals or industry. There are things left behind from previous Portugal Fashion editions, materials (supposedly) from the city left to abandon, pieces of lives left behind, and forgotten animal protection associations. Hidden pieces of Porto, abandoned, as if they had already been thrown away.
